Midnight Lace - 1960 ****

Doris Day isn't normally known for starring in thrillers, but it's such a refreshing change, and I'd been dying to see this movie for years and years. Such intensity and utterly gripping.
Kit and her new husband Tony are living together in London. Kit is a wealthy heiress and Tony is a financier. One evening, whilst walking home across Grosvenor Square in the fog, she hears a chilling voice threatening to kill her within a month. Running home in a panic she tells Tony who reassures her that she must be the unfortunate victim of a practical joker. However, soon she is receiving terrifying phone calls from the unknown individual and is utterly dependent on Tony who takes her to Scotland Yard to discuss the situation. Privately, the police tell Tony that they believe Kit is hallucinating and is simply in need of some attention from her husband. The arrive of her aunt Bea does little to calm her nerves, and she starts to believe that everyone is against her and no one is taking her seriously. I LOVE this sort of film, partly because it's so frustrating watching, and partly because I love to try and figure out the culprit before the main actor does. Excellent. A treat.
