(HORROR) Jessabelle - 2014 ****

Jessabelle seems to have it all. She is pregnant and has a lovely boyfriend. They are all set to move into their dream house when the unthinkable happens. Jessabelle's world is shattered, and after time spent in hospital she goes back to her family home to stay with her father and recuperate. Before long strange things are happening - she finds a series of VHS tapes left from her deceased mother seeming to tell a different story to what she knows of her death, her father starts acting unlike himself and refuses to discuss his late wife, and she sees a ghostly presence of a girl in the house. Jessabelle hooks up with an old friend named Preston, and slowly they both become entangled in the past of the house, the history of the strange tapes and the ghostly presence, and most importantly, Jessabelle's past, present and fate, It's a strange film, with a peculiar twist, and actually seemed rather clever to me. Certainly unique, certainly well acted, and most importantly a film that kept me thinking for ages afterwards.
