Blue Valentine - 2010 ***

The crumbling and rocky relationship of Dean and Cindy is under intense scrutiny in Derek Cianfrance's romantic drama. There are remnants of 'Revolutionary Road' here, where everything seems fine on the surface to the casual observer, but actually disturbing things are happening out of sight. Although very much in love with Cindy, Dean isn't particularly ambitious, and Cindy herself has a complicated previous background with an ex-partner that causes her to give birth to a child that could possibly be his. The film cuts backwards and forwards from the start of their courtship, through their marriage and right up until the traumatic and emotional end to their partnership. It's highly tense, almost painful to watch, and Ryan Gosling continues to surprise me.
